Tom brings experience as both a laywer and a member of the clergy to his work assisting faith leaders in their employment relationships. Prior to joining the firm, Tom served as a pulpit rabbi in congregations in the Boston area. Before he received his rabbinic ordination, he practiced law with a large law firm in Boston and as a Massachusetts Assistant Attorney General. One of his areas of specialization was employment law. During this time, Tom’s article on legal ethics was published in the Buffalo Law Review.
Even during his rabbinic career, Tom continued to use his legal training. He has served for over a decade as the Amicus Brief Coordinator for the Central Conference of American Rabbis, determining which Supreme Court and other appellate briefs the Conference would lend its name to. Tom is currently the Chair of the Conference’s Ethics Process Review Committee, which proposes revisions to the Conference’s Ethics Code.
Tom was awarded a B.A., magna cum laude, from Yale University in 1976. He received an A.M. (Master’s) degree in American History from Harvard in 1977 and graduated with a J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1982. He was ordained as a rabbi by Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion in 2000. Tom has also completed certification in programs in negotiation and mediation.
